Smooth muscle is not responsible for preventing back-flow. Smooth muscle is found at the entry to cappilary beds. Arteries supply blood to many cappilary beds, not just one. Smooth muscle can contract, giving a wider bore through which blood can pass into a cappilary bed. Or, it can relax, closing up the vessel (arteriole) which deleivers blood to the cappilary bed. This control is useful in getting an erection and delivering more/less blood to the skin when it’s hot/cold.

You’re right about elastic recoil, from the elastic fibres. When the left ventricle is compressing the blood pressure surges. When the left ventricle is filling, the blood pressure falls. (The two blood pressures are refered to as systolic and diastolic B.P) Having too much of a difference in the two blood pressures is damaging. At the higher blood pressure the arteries are able to expand, limiting the surge in blood pressure. When the blood pressure falls, the elastic recoil reduces the diamter of arteries, helping to maintain a moderate blood pressure.
