Dr. Jay Calvert Shares Details on New Patent-Protected Investigational Breast Implants

Los Angeles-based plastic surgeon, Dr. Jay Calvert posted more information about the IDEAL breast implants on his blog. He discussed the frequently asked questions about this new product and discussed when it would be available to the public for a clinical trial.

Board certified Dr. Jay Calvert was chosen as one of the investigators of the new IDEAL breast implants. These implants are known to have the same result as that of silicone gel but are much safer. The clinical trial has begun accepting patients who are willing to undergo the procedure and commit to follow up check ups for the next 10 years.

More and more women are turning to cosmetic surgeries such as breast augmentation and rhinoplasty in order to enhance their looks. The increase in the demand for these types of operations have paved the way for new procedures and tools to be developed in order to ensure the safety of the patients. Among these new developments is the IDEAL breast implant.

“This [IDEAL breast implant] is the first improvement in the basic design of the saline-filled breast implant since it was introduced over 30 years ago,” explained Dr. Calvert when asked about the new product. The IDEAL breast implant is saline-filled and structurally lowered in order to fit better to the chest wall. It was also designed so that it doesn’t wrinkle and would feel and look natural.

The clinical trial for this new product is currently on going and patients are being selected to undergo the treatment. The trial program specifies that the patient must pay for the breast augmentation, however, if they are able to complete the 10-year clinical trial, then they will be able to receive some financial benefit. Dr. Calvert, MD, FACS, who is one of the surgeons performing this clinical trial, said that it is like an insurance policy; the company will put part of the patient’s payment in her trust fund, and after 10 years, the trust fund is expected to grow to about 10000 US Dollars. Dr. Calvert added that “women who entered the study will then have the comfort of knowing that there’s money for them at the end of the study, if they do all their follow ups and complete the study properly.” Even though Dr. Calvert is optimistic about this new breast augmentation technique, he still adds that, “if problems come up and we need to draw upon that money and stop the study, then there’s money there to do that.”

Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Calvert also performs other cosmetic surgeries including breast augmentation, post-bariatric surgery, face-lift and rhinoplasty among others. He is based in Los Angeles, California and sees new patients at his two offices in Beverly Hills and Newport Beach.

is it possible to get tissue transferred from one breast to another?

i am 21, and all my life my right breast has been larger than my left. now i know many women will say this is just normal. however its bothered me because i feel its more noticeable on me since i’m barely a size A cup to begin with. i would never want any implants as that has too many risks and i have no wish to be larger in general but is it possible to take tissue from my right side and implant it into my left to even it out? do you think any plastic surgeon would do this? i’ve read about augmentation through taking body fat from other areas but i’m only a size 2 and have nothing to spare. any other ideas you could give me would also be much appreciated! thanks

At 21 your breasts may still grow a bit. I was a little lopsided myself between 18-22. My breasts didn’t even out until I was 25…but they did.

i think you should worry less about it right now, let your body finish growing. If you still have this problem in your mid-late 20’s, then start considering augmentation. And even at a size 2, you still have body fat that can be used. Like, in your butt/thighs…you would be surprised. I was a size 0 when I was your age and even I had a little junk in the trunk.

Breast Augmentation Implant Placement

After you have decided to undergo <a href=http://www.dr-pena.com/breast-augmentation.html>breast augmentation</a>, have selected a plastic surgeon, and been given the green light that you are a candidate, you will then discuss <a href=http://www.dr-pena.com/breast-implant-placement.html>breast implant placement options</a> with your surgeon. There are two types of breast implant placement: submuscular and subglandular. Each of them have their advantages and disadvantages.

Subglandular Placement

Also known as submammary or over-the-muscle placement, subglandular placement puts the breast implant between the mammary gland and the pectoral, or chest, muscle. There are a few different incision types available with subglandular placement, including periareolar, inframmamary, and transaxillary. Though your plastic surgeon will have suggestions on where the implant incision should be, it is ultimately up to you.

Subglandular Advantages

• Easier access in case another surgery is ultimately needed
• Less post operative pain and discomfort, and therefore less recovery time
• Easier placement since the chest muscle does not need to be moved
• Creation of cleavage is easily created; useful if breasts are naturally spaced far apart
• Women involved in body sculpting or weight training may choose this placement because the breasts may look unnatural when the chest muscle is flexed due to the breast implant shifting

Subglandular Disadvantages

• Breasts may look less natural than those place beneath the muscle
• More pronounced roundness
• Breast imaging is difficult during mammographies, which makes early detection of breast cancer more difficult
• Rippling may be seen and felt more, especially with women who have little breast tissue
• Capsular contracture, or scarring around the implant, may occur, which can be extremely painful and can result in having to get a second surgery

Submuscular Placement

This is also known as subpectoral since the implant is placed beneath the pectoral muscle. A partial submuscular placement puts the implant beneath two-thirds of the muscle; a full submuscular placement uses other muscles besides the pectorals to cover the implant. All the incisions subglandular implants use can be used for submuscular implant placement.

Submuscular Advantages

• More natural appearance and feel due to the edges and ripples being covered by the pectoral muscle
• Women with smaller breasts will see better results
• Does not interfere with mammography
• Extremely low risk of capsular contracture
• “Bottoming out” when the breast implant winds up too low with the nipple positioned too high is not very likely

Submuscular Disadvantages

• Breasts may sit higher on the chest until the pectoral muscles relax
• Moving the muscles means the recovery time will be longer
• If another breast surgery is needed, getting to the implant is more difficult
• Athletic women tend to have worse results since a distorted appearance is created, and the breast implant may become displaced during workouts
